5jPzQKE5_400x400Susán Hoemke, a mother of 4, was happily married to her high school sweetheart, raising her family in a suburb of Texas, grateful for the storybook life she was living.

But life is not a fairy tale, and after many happy years Susán and her husband were confronted with a parent’s worst nightmare when they discovered their oldest son Hayden was addicted to drugs. Her book Healing Scarred Hearts is a heart-wrenching story of their son’s eight-year battle with drug addiction, and his tragic death at age twenty-two.

Through the pain of losing a child, Susán describes the crimes her son committed in his desperation for a fix, and how the mental and physical impact of the drugs turned this creative, funny, talented young man into a stranger they didn’t recognize. The years surrounding and following Hayden’s death have been some of the most difficult years for all of them. His addiction not only affected him but also those who loved him.

Susán and her husband have spent the past few years since their son’s death rebuilding their family, and looking for light in their darkest days.

In writing her book Healing Scarred Hearts, Susan Hoemke hopes that the incredibly difficult journey her family has taken with the loss of their son and brother, will serve as a wake-up call to people everywhere about the drug epidemic across this country, and as a song of hope for those suffering through what her family has endured.
